HOLYOKE IRISH HONOR DORIS

One The St. Patrick’s Committee of Holyoke is honoring historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin as the 56th recipient of the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Award, given annually to Americans of Irish descent who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field or profession.

The author of numerous books, including The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, and Teams of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, Kearns Goodwin has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and the Lincoln Prize.

Doris joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including US Congressman Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, astronaut Catherine “Cody” Coleman, US Ambassador to Ireland and Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, and fellow historian David McCullough.  She will receive the award on March 16 at a dinner at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, and the following day will march in the 62nd annual Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Also being honored this year are Irish historian Christine Kinealy, winner of the Ambassador Award, and Don Corridan, Grand Marshall of the parade.
